Septic tanks can be buried anywhere from a few inches to several feet below the surface of the ground, forcing homeowners to dig up the lid of their septic tank each time it needs to be serviced. Hand digging can be tedious and back-breaking work, and is frequently avoided by many people. The avoidance of digging often results in a neglected, and in severe cases failing, septic system. Many homeowners are unaware of potential modifications that can be made to their septic tank to eliminate the need to dig altogether. This is where a riser comes into play.
What is a riser? Sometimes also referred to as a manhole extension, a riser is an extension of the manhole on a current septic tank lid that allows the lid to be brought to the surface – thus eliminating digging! The installation in many cases is quick, easy and affordable. The end result is the septic tank lid being converted to a manhole sized cover (if it is not already manufactured as such), and brought to the surface for easy access. We customarily replace the old concrete lid with a green, plastic lid that is fastened to the riser pipe itself. The lid seals tight to prevent odors from escaping, and the green color of the lid allows it to blend in with the grass in your yard!
Risers can save you time, effort and money in the long run, and are, in many cases, a requirement for properties to pass a septic inspection in real estate transactions in Pennsylvania.
